Chapter Twenty-Two

RENEE

Driving the route up and down the mountain was becoming more familiar, I thought as I pulled the car around to the back of the cabin. Michael was going to be so excited when he heard the news. Glancing quickly at the cabin, I noticed the back door standing open, but that wasn’t unusual. We left it open frequently to let in some additional light. With the power off and the front drapes closed, it could get really dark in the cabin.

“Michael,” I called out excitedly, wanting to tell him my good news but got no response. Grabbing the barbeque, I hopped out of the car. But what I saw next, stopped me dead in my tracks. I heard what sounded like screams, and realized the sound was coming from me. My excitement evaporated; the celebratory dinner now long forgotten. I rushed in, but knew instantly it was too late. There was nothing I could do. I had to get the police.

I drove like a mad woman down the mountain, crying all the way, my tears making it difficult to see. The car swerved from side to side after taking one of the curves too quickly and I struggled to keep it on the narrow mountain road. Michael had been right, but even so, it was hard to process. This couldn’t be happening. Obviously, he had told me his life was in jeopardy, but I never believed that something would actually happen. I was stunned.

Tears continued to stream down my face as I rode silently in the police car back up the mountain. Previously the surrounding forest seemed quiet and serene, now it seemed dark and sinister. This wasn’t real.

Time passed, but I didn’t know how much, nor did I really care. The police and investigators were in the cabin. The coroner had been called and I sat alone in the back of one of the patrol cars. The police had wanted me to stay at the station while they went up to the cabin, but I wanted to come back. I longed to be close to Michael, but he was gone now. Fresh tears rolled down my cheeks again. We had our fights like any couple, but I couldn’t imagine life without him.

The yellow crime scene tape was swaying in the breeze, mocking me with its color and movement. I watched the detective and police officers as they came out of the cabin and stopped just short of the car I was in.

“So, do we know who owns this cabin?” the detective asked.

The other officer flipped open his notebook, “We checked the records. Seems like the cabin is owned by Maggie Sanders. Looks like the title was transferred to her pretty recently too.”

“Is that the Maggie who owns the flower shop?”

“Yes, that’s her.” The policeman confirmed.

“Can you call her and have her meet me at the police station in a bit?”

“Sure thing.”

I watched the policeman walk off and the detective headed my way. He opened my door and I tried to focus on what he was saying.
